Welcome to Term 6
Welcome back to Term 6 in Swallow Class! This term we will be learning all about Africa! In particular, we will be finding out about the human and physical geographical features of this wonderful, diverse and varied continent. We will begin the term listening to a range of traditional Africa Tales. We will be using these to develop our creative writng skills and motivation to read a wider range of texts.
This topic also lends itself perfectly to the Arts. We will be getting messy, using Modroc by making our very own African masks.
We are continuing with orienteering in PE which will help us develop our geographical map reading skills and we will apply these when looking at atlases, globes and digital mapping. We will also be looking at directional language and compass points! We will also be thinking about sports day and dveloping our Athletics skills.
We are participating in Sports week, Monday 28th June, when we will be taking part in a variety of sporting acitivities. We are pleased to be doing cricket and dance with external coaches during this time. Sports Day is Friday 9th July.
Please follow this link to have a look in detail at the topic web which outlines the learning across subjects.
Home learning opportunities
Reading: Please send your child into school each Monday with their reading book pack so that we can exchange them for fresh ones for the week. Please try to hear your child read each day, encourage them to sound out unfamiliar words and talk to them about the meaning of any new words they encounter in their books. To deepen their understanding, ask your child questions about their book, perhaps get them to recount what the book was about, how characters were feeling and why things happened and whether they would recommend it to a friend and why.
Spelling: Each Monday your child will be given a new set of spellings to practise ready for a quiz the following week. They should practise spelling using the 'Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check' process and when they are secure with the spelling they could write some sentences using the words in their yellow spelling book. For this week's spellings, please follow this link.
By logging into Spellzone you can practise the spellings that have been set. We can check who has been logging on and playing the games!!!
Maths: Your child can use their login to access Numbots and TT Rockstars to practise maths and times tables.
